Liverpool has learned who it will face in next round of the Carabao Cup after defeating Chelsea in dramatic fashion through a penalty shootout while being set to play another EPL team
Liverpool will not play against Fleetwood Town or Bradford City in the next round of the Carabao Cup, after drawing Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
The Reds booked their place in the last eight after winning from penalty shootouts against Chelsea, with Wesley Fofana missing from the spot, sending them crashing out.
Andoni Iraola made seven changes to his Liverpool team against a strong-looking Chelsea outfit, in a gamble that has paid off while keeping his side in the cup competition. Iraola will now face his former side at Anfield in the next round, with Liverpool missing out on the chance to draw a team in the EFL.
Manchester City will be set to host Bradford City, as Everton or Newcastle United travel to Fleetwood Town after their unlikely win over Arsenal.
Liverpool were victors on penalties themselves, after Giorgi Mamardashvili made a crucial save from the spot to deny Emmanuel Emegha the chance to send Chelsea through.
It means Liverpool is not eliminated from the first trophy available this season, with the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Brighton, Spurs, and now Chelsea already out.
The Reds avoided Manchester City, but could face them in the semi-final, which is a two-legged tie.
But they will come up against a tough Bournemouth team in December, who they narrowly defeated in September with an Alexander Isak goal.
Chelsea went ahead in the game against Liverpool in the Round of 16, with a penalty converted by Morgan Rogers after Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo.
Just moments later, Fofana handled the ball in the box from a corner when competing with Virgil van Dijk, with Cody Gakpo sending Mike Penders the wrong way from the spot.
Liverpool had a chance to win in penalties after Valentin Barco hit the most, but Kostas Tsimikas shot over the bar.
Expertly taken penalties from Bradley Barcola and Joe Gomez put pressure on Chelsea, with Fofana being the one to miss to send the Reds through.
Liverpool will face Porto in the Champions League before Leeds in the Premier League in December, and now hosting Bournemouth, followed by welcoming Spurs, which will be four straight home games.
