Liverpool's recent history with Brighton has seen plenty of challenging matches play out between the two sides, with Jurgen Klopp suffering a particularly frustrating defeat in 2023
Liverpool and Brighton have been held up as the models of successful and sustainable clubs at different levels over the past few years, which has naturally led to some interesting encounters between the two sides.
Of the last 10 meetings across all competitions, the record is relatively equal. The Reds have five wins to the Seagulls' three, while two draws have followed in that time on the head-to-head. While there have been some memorable triumphs for Liverpool, there have also been some frustrating defeats, including a clash in January 2023 that left Jurgen Klopp raging with his players on the day.
A Solly March brace was followed up by a Danny Welbeck finish to give Brighton a comfortable 3-0 victory at home, compounding a difficult run of form for the Merseyside outfit at the time.
For Klopp, it was up there as his worst ever defeat, as he fumed in his post-match press conference about the lack of organization within his team.
Speaking to the press, he reflected on the game and said: "Bad. Really bad. I can't remember a worse game. It was a very organized team against a not very organized team. Massively frustrated.
"We gave the ball away, the spaces were too big, and we couldn't push up. That is obviously not good, especially against a super well-drilled side like Brighton. They got more confident, and we did the opposite."
That defeat was in the midst of a poor run, coming from a team that had come close to winning a quadruple the season before, leaving Klopp unsure of how things could turn so quickly.
"How can you explain that? The same players played outstanding football matches, but if things aren't properly organized, then it can look like that," he fumed.
"We were always a bit late and things like this. If you don't win key challenges and lose the ball too easily, they are the two worst things that can happen in football. There is no formation that can solve that.
"My responsibility, I know that. To improve that will be not too difficult. From this game, we can pick up absolutely nothing apart from things that do not work."
It took a few more games for things to turn around, but form did improve thereafter. That included a 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United before the end of the season, but it wasn't enough to earn a top-four finish.
With Brighton showing more of that ruthless edge this season, Liverpool will need to be at its best to avoid a repeat of that day, with Andoni Iraola still looking to establish himself in the Anfield dugout.
It remains to be seen how the match could play out, but there will certainly be some lessons learned from one of the more frustrating days of Klopp's tenure.
