Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola collected his first win at Anfield in the Premier League, with Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz scoring for the Reds in a 2-0 victory vs Brighton
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola was unsure whether the Reds' game with Brighton would go ahead on Sunday — though he would have been delighted that it did in the end.
Goals from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz in the first half put Liverpool two goals to the good. While Brighton saw more of the ball after the interval, a strong team performance — and some good play from the likes of Ronald Araujo — saw Iraola's side collect an important three points.
"I think it's going to be windy, definitely," Iraola had told Sky Sports ahead of kick-off at Anfield.
"In the morning, when I woke up today, I watched my garden. I said, 'I don't know. I'm not sure we can play today!'"
After laughing, Iraola added: "I think it has improved a little bit; it looks better. And I hope it doesn't affect too much the play."
Alisson Becker's distribution certainly appeared to be impacted as he lashed the ball out of play numerous times. But the game itself was a decent spectacle in the circumstances.
"Today, especially the performance, was really good against a really good team," Isak, who netted in the first half to double Liverpool's lead, told Sky Sports.
"The first half is what we want to be about: winning balls and the intensity."
Speaking to the BBC, former Reds man Charlie Adam added: "Liverpool took their chances and deserved their win. This Liverpool team, it takes time and we have a long way to go.
"You can see where Iraola will want this team to go. They will become a top team in the future."
Liverpool.com says: It was an impressive team performance from the Reds. First half, the front four came to life and were decisive, and that proved to be the difference.
While the second half was more about Brighton seeing possession, Alisson's goal was never that much under threat. Individuals like Araujo deserve praise, but so does the team as a whole.
If Isak and Wirtz can play like that, and Bradley Barcola can continue his steady improvement after another positive showing, then Liverpool will collect many more wins moving forward.
